Gina-
You've written key ideas about these four characters. I don't quite understand what you are saying about Dr. Armstrong. What is his 'special treatment'? More explanation is needed.

Assignment #2 (to be done in class on Wednesday, December 2)

  • Put a line between Assignment #1 and Assignment #2.
  • Read chapter two.
  • On your student page ABOVE assignment #1, choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
  • Find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
  • Write the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
  • In a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
Suspense
  • "The sea...So peaceful to-day--sometimes so cruel....The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned....Found drowned...Drowned at sea... Drowned-drowned-drowned.... No, she wouldn't remember ...She wouldn't not think of it! All that was over..." Page 32
  • "Mrs. Rodgers said: "No, Miss, I don't know anything. Just a list of the ladies and gentlemen and what rooms they were to have." Vera said: "Mrs. Owen didn't mention me?" Mrs. Rodgers' eyelashes flickered. "I haven't seen Mrs. Owen--not yet. We only came here two days ago." Page 29
  • "Ten little Indian boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine. Nine little Indian boys sat up very late; One over slept himself and then there were eight. Eight little Indian boys travelling in Devon; One said he'd stay there and then there were seven. Seven little Indian boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in halfs and then there were six. Six little Indian boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung one and then there were four. Four little Indian boys going out to sea; A red herring swalled one and then there were three. Three little Indian boys walking in the Zoo; A big bear hugged one and then there were two. Two little Indian boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was one. One little Indian boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were none." Page 31
  • "Mrs. Rogers had a flat monotonous voice. Vera looked at her curiously. What a white bloodless ghost of a woman! Very respectable looking, with her hair dragged back from her face and her black dress. Queer light eyes that shifted the whole time from place to place. Vera thought: "She looks frightened of her own shadow." Yes, that was it--frightened! She looked like a woman who walked in mortal fear...A little shiver passed down Vera's back. What on earth was the woman so afraid of?" Page 29
All these quotes are very suspicious to me. The first one is suspicious because Vera Claythorne is saying this and it's creepy. The readers don't know what she is saying, or what she meant by it. The second one is suspicious because even the people that work at the house haven't seen the Owens yet. This leaves the reader thinking if there really is an Owens couple, or that they may never come to the house. The third one is suspicious because there are ten people who are invited to the island and there are also ten little indians. This makes the reader think that maybe the poem has something to do with what is going to happen the the group. The fourth one was suspicious because Mrs. Rogers seems very creepy and afraid of something. This makes the reader think about who she really is, or what she is afraid of.

Good insights and understanding of the quotes. Use transitions to get from one idea to the next.
Always capitalize 'Indian' - it is a proper noun.
You followed all the directions; good for you!

Assignment #1
  • I predict this book is going to be mysterious and people might die or be accused of murder. I will probably like this book.
  • how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?

A mystery novel is different from a narrative because in a mystery book, it gives you clues to figure out the plot line. A narrative just basically tells you the plot line.
  • how might the title be a clue to the story?

And Then There Were None, leaves me suspenseful. I don't know what or who the "none" is referring to. Also, what happened to the "none"? It makes me want to read the book.

And Then There Were None homepageGina-
Good start! Most students like this book! Links are supposed to go to 'AND THEN THERE WERE NONE'. Most students linked to 'here' and that is incorrect. See if you can get it right!
